1. He almost gave ‘Kiss’ away
Prince gave ‘Kiss’ to Mazarati which was a band that featured bassist of The Revolution Mark Brown and Bobby Rivkin during the ‘Parade’ sessions. The original version of the song was an acoustic blues number. Rivkin and Brown later added a funky backing track. Prince loved this new version and took the song back. He kept their rhythm, but eliminated most of the things they added to the song. Rivkin was given credit as the song’s arranger, but was not given a production or writing credit.
2. Susannah Melvoin inspired most of his best songs
Prince was madly in love with Susannah Melvoin during the mid 80s. She was the twin sister of The Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin who was believed to own one of the best acoustic guitars in his inventory. His romance with her along with his philandering formed the basis for some of his best songs which include ‘The Beautiful Ones’, ‘Nothing Compares 2 U, and ‘Forever In My Life’. After they broke up, Prince recorded a song called “Wally,” in which he expressed his most intense thoughts about Melvoin.
3. He wanted to release an entire album as a woman
Prince formed a feminine alter ego called Camille when he was working on ‘Sign O The Times’. He used this persona on the single ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’. He got the effect by slowing down the tape while he sang normally, and then speeding the tape up in playback. He recorded a whole album as Camille, but later scrapped it. He planned to make a movie also.
4. Prince cancelled release of ‘The Black Album’
Prince cancelled his album ‘The Black Album’ a week before it’s release date in 1987. He did so as he was convinced that the record was a work of the devil. He gave explanation to his decision during his Lovesexy tour program. He said that the record was made to ‘silence his critics’, but later realized that the dark side of him was allowed to create something evil. The album was eventually released in 1994.
5. He did Batman soundtrack because he has crush on Kim Basinger, the lead actress
Tim Burton planned to split the Batman soundtrack between Prince and Michael Jackson. Prince was supposed to provide funk tracks, and Michael Jackson was supposed to sing ballads. But as Prince fell for the lead actress of the movie Kim Basinger, he ended up recording the entire album. He even cancelled a Japanese tour so that he could work on his material and impress her. Right after the release of the soundtrack, Prince produced an album called ‘A Hollywood Affair’ which featured Kim Basinger. The record was scrapped later.
6. He met his first wife via videotapes
Mayte Garcia’s mother was a huge fan of Prince. She insisted her daughter to send videotapes of her belly dance routine to Prince during her teen years. Prince and Garcia met when she was 16. According to Prince, he fell in love with her on first sight. He started a long distance relationship with Garcia. They exchanged letters on a regular basis. Prince used to give her tapes of his new songs and she would dance to the songs and send him the videos. She later moved to Minneapolis and became a dancer for his ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ tour.
7. He almost lost his Paisley Park Studio for overspending
Prince’s income started to go down by the mid-90s due to a number of flop records. But his spendings were huge. He kept his Paisley Park complex running. It was fully staffed 24 hours a day and spent $500,000 per year for keeping the studio ready just so that he could record if he was in town. Paisley Park had a full time catering team, 10 tailors who would make clothing for Prince, his musicians and a film crew who would shoot videos that was never released. For his poor business decisions and uncontrollable spending habits, he almost lost the whole business.
8. He was supposed to sing duet with Michael Jackson in ‘Bad’
Michael Jackson wrote “Bad” with the intention to sing it as a duet with Prince. Prince was, however, was not comfortable with the lyrics of the song. He objected to the opening line of the song ‘Your butt is mine’. Prince asked Michael Jackson, ‘Who’s singing that to whom?’
