John Bam Bam Morgan’s – Jody Watley Band_Live Arsenio Hall Show 1989

This is me on the drums performing with the Jody Watley band. We truly had a great time performing this song Friends. Enjoy, Bam
Video Rating: 4 / 5

Jimmy Jam hired me to be the drummer in this great video in the summer of 1985. I was playing at my own bands house gig not 2 blocks away in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. So after this full day shooting I walk to my gig. lol I met a great woman at this filming, she was the makeup artist, her name is Andy Gilmore and i surely miss her. Wonder why she is these days. We were best friends. Anyway, The shooting was wonderful and I had the time of my life. Everybody was cool and light hearted. At the end of the video it was chance that they captured my drum stick twirling as i HIT the drum pad behind my head. I guess that shot made an impact around the country as something cool. It was just something I wanted to do live on my next tour with Andre Cymone. If he only knew the things i had planned i never told anybody. I was planning gymnastic mini trampolines and electronic drums placed side by side and me doing running flips off of the trampolines throwing my drum sticks to the beat of the music. LOL, LOL Perhaps my TRUE calling was to join a TRAVELING CIRCUS as a Stunt Performer. now I’m too damn old, dammit! lol Anyway enjoy. OH, David Ieland is playing Guitar on this video. he’s great! Bam

  17. johnbambammorgan says:

@wblhoops23, How excellent. I was wondering if I’d ever talk to anybody who was in this video. I had a blast that day and became really great friend with the makeup artist for years. I have to contact with Cherrelle since the late 80′s. Still have that Pink Dress? lol That was long ago. I played at Felty’s that night after this video shoot, did you stop by? It was 1 Block away in the Butler Square Building. Good to hear from you. Are you still in MPLS.?

I loved that Arsenio Hall show too!

  23. johnbambammorgan says:

Jody and I spoke last year concerning these clips.
She is doing quite well and still doing great music. Her and Andre split up sometime in the early 1990′s. I wish them both well, we had some great times on her first major tour in 1989. I’m just glad I was a apart of that musical history. I’d love to make a video telling about that day and the things that happened.
    hey another video idea! LOL

  24. johnbambammorgan says:

Glad you liked it, I’d say this performance is my favorite of all national broadcast performances.
    Bam

  25. MrMystery52 says:

Woow, this is good music. What a groove….and Bam Bam on the drums…yeeaah…cool !!!

  26. johnbambammorgan says:

LOL, thanks Staffan, glad you dig it.
This performance means a lot to me.
    Bam

  27. virginQ says:

how can i see Jody singing “Whatcha Gonna do for Me” on tour 1989 dressed in all that red, she was fierce!

  28. virginQ says:

i remember, she was awesome, that song is awesome, i remember all the diamond rings she had on her fingers, she was kickin it! we saw her in Dallas, TX…beautiful woman.

  29. GazamYT says:

That big clap – man, I LOVE big 80′s MPLS Funk Claps, was that on the record? Looks like some other guy is hitting a Simmons in the background? What module or syth was that from?

  30. GazamYT says:

Thanks for your insight. I did see further in the video that the guy was using a Roland SPD something, at the time then it was the Octapad, cool! Via MIDI to the LinnDrum LM-2, did that have MIDI? Also, from the drum sounds in the LM-2, I dont remember such a big splashy sound. I know Korg had a clap sound like this in their keyboards, sounds very similar now that I hear it. I dont remember the synth model though.

I use an SPD-8 and 20, SPD8 will fail, the contacts break with hard drumming.

  31. GazamYT says:

I cant count about 4 or 5 times I had to take my SPD-8 to Rolands service center….!

Bruce Forat says the Linn – LM-1 and 2 can have MIDI capabilities as custom upgrades so perhaps his LinnDrumm (LM-2) had such custom MIDI capabilities.

YOu could install chips with samples but the Linns never sampled themselves.

  32. baardk2 says:

    Just greate :) 5/5

  33. purplexxe8 says:

  35. downwithutube says:

    Bam Bam, great stuff!

That fellow on keys looks familiar. Who are the other people in the band?

  36. johnbambammorgan says:

@downwithutube , Tim Bradly, keys – Mike Baker, Guitar – Daryl Boo, Percussion – Shaun Labelle, Bass keys, all these guys are from my town, Minneapolis. Then there was Scott Mayo, Keys, Sax, he is from L.A.

  37. JellyBean2144 says:

  39. chinolatino38 says:

what r i remember of this 89 tour were the back up singers/dancers . who are they? they were awesome

  40. Ursugarspice says:

Gee she sure was great….great performer…she really knows how to work the crowd and Bam you’re awesome…that goes without saying.

  41. johnbambammorgan says:

@Ursugarspice , Awesome? Thanks. But during rehearsal for this show, i knocked the camera man off my drum riser flat on his back. I accidentally smacked him hard with my drum stick and hand doing high sticking. lol, I felt AWFUL, I’m just glad he was not injured.

  42. Ursugarspice says:

@johnbambammorgan yes, awesome, amazing…you had to be close to prefection to be drumming for an entertainer like her and the camera man should have known better especially filming a live show even if they do retakes. I watched filming an episode for Boston Legal… my son was doing the lighting not a pin could drop I was getting a dry throat almost suffocated trying not to cough my son looked over at me. I saw the look on his face like ‘oh no’ and my face was red until the green light came on.

  43. johnbambammorgan says:

@Ursugarspice , There are NO retakes on this show. Before the show aired we rehearsed. That”s when the camera man went for a Bam Bam airlines Flight. lol
We were doing a different song too, L.O.V.E.R. i did way high sticking in that song. But Jody did an interview so we couldn’t not do the second song. BUMMER.

  44. amaruonline says:

@johnbambammorgan THANKS FOR UPLOADING THIS ONE!!! I’m a massive Jody fan, I just recently did a video on her and her work, check my channel. And man, if you do have a video for L.O.V.E.R. … that is one of my BIG favorites on the ‘Larger Than Life’ album :) :) Have a good one, AMARU.
