Andre Cymone 1982 Interview

In this 1982 interview, Andre Cymone talks about Prince and Morris Day being in his band Grand Central, that they all started at his house where everybody got together, his dad and Prince’s dad played in a band together and he was supposed to produce Time. Check it out and listen carefully.

Pretty good quality video, but still from my old VHS-tapes. A DVD-release wouldn’t hurt. ;) This is from AndrĂ©’s third album “AC” released in 1985. The song was written by Prince. I personally were into his first and second album more. Especially “Living In The New Wave” from 1982 blew me away.

Is that Wendy & Lisa on back-up vocals?

  5. awalker773 says:

Bigdaddy45able , I agree with you brother! 1984-1985 was such a good year. It was my freshman year in high school and I reminense so much about that year. I enjoyed that year more than my senior year in 1988. Every morning before school that fall of 1984, I use to listen to this song before catching the bus. I would do anything to go back just for one day. Who wants to go back with me. This time I will bring the liquor. (lol)

1985! I was 20 yrs old. This was a huge club hit. It went to #3 on the R&B charts The song would pack the dance floor. We use to dance our asses off to this. I remember sitting in the club and this song would come on and people would be running to the dance floor. Man, what fun memories. What has happen to music today?

  16. MyPurpleL1fe says:

Love this song, it’s crazayy, haven’t heard it in sooo long. Even though I’m a major prince fan, it seemed, with this song, he tried to clone himself off a little. I would’ve liked it better if prince just performed it.

  17. daphnerh1984 says:

This song would have been 10times better had Prince performed and released it. But whatever, Andre did it well. I hated when he left playing with Prince though!!

  18. missfunkyflyy says:

@daphnerh1984 I disagree, AndrĂ© made the song. But, I think Prince recorded it too. Maybe he didn’t release it officially, but I have a vague memory of hearing his version, perhaps on a bootleg. The folks over at prince.org would know more. :)

  19. imsolive89 says:

@missfunkyflyy yeah prince did record it too unreleased, i like his version better, i heard it on The Work.

  20. 749675 says:

  27. rayzencent says:

This reminds me of that Prince interview by Dick Clark … hella painful, I don’t know who I feel sorry for more… the Host or Andre

  28. paul3fun says:

Living in the NEW WAVE was a type album too

  29. 1mformed says:

  33. bobbyz23 says:

@Rid Prince and Morris was in his band before Prince formed his own band and the time thats a fact.

  34. Merrida says:

Listen…Andre started Grand Central…Prince was kicked out of his unstable household…Andre’s mother,Bernadette, put a roof over Prince head…Prince said Andre is the only cat who is as good as him.

  35. EndorphinMachine says:

Thought he was going to be an aloof idiot at first but he opened up in the end. Not quite sure what the benefit of the relentless laaaydaaay questioning was. How I wish I could be back at the start of the 80′s again…..*sigh*

  36. desertdetroiter says:

Oh shit…the Scene in Detroit with that jheri curl cat Nat Morris. LMAO…man this stuff brings back some serious memories. Andre Cymone was large in Detroit.

  37. NthDegreeEnt says:

I think I read somewhere that Andre wrote and co-wrote a lot of Prince’s earlier material. But Prince refused to give him credit. So that, along with Prince becoming more and more of a dictator led to Andre’s departure from the band.

Apparently he left right before the release of The Rebels, which were supposed to be a hard rock outfit including him, Dez, Dr. Fink, and Bobbie Z.

  38. lvsocialdiva says:

Wow. I watched The Scene religiously! It’s 6:00 and it’s time to rock, we rock nonstop til 7:00, we don’t stop!! I leaened how to dance watching this show. Prince always had love for Detroit.

  39. brownsugar1979 says:

People wanna criticize the jheri curl still ,but no one will say nothing about these brothers with their pants saggin below their asses. Laugh and say something about that shit!!!

  40. therealraybaby says:
